People in opposition areas in Aleppo reject Syrian-Turkish rapprochement
ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) – On Friday, people of the opposition-held areas in Aleppo and Idlib governorates, northwestern Syria, took to the streets to protest against the normalization of relations between the Syrian government and Turkey.
This came on the background of the meeting held in Moscow between Turkish Minister of Defense Hulusi Akar and the head of its National Intelligence Organization (MIT), Hakan Fidan, on one hand, and Syrian Minister of Defense Ali Mahmoud Abbas and Syrian intelligence chief Ali Mamlouk on the other along with Russia’s Minister of Defense Sergei Shoigu on Dec. 28.
An exclusive source told North Press that hundreds of the protestors demonstrated holding banners rejecting Turkey’s calls for reconciliation with the Syrian government.
The protestors asserted their rejection to normalize with the Syrian government and called on the international community to hold the government accountable for the crimes it committed against the people.
The cities of Azaz, Afrin, Mar’e, Jarablus, and al-Bab in the countryside of Aleppo witnessed mass protests, according to the source.
In mid-December Erdogan said that he suggested to Putin a trilateral meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and trilateral steps on security issues.
“For the discussions on this issue, first the intelligence organizations, then the defense ministers, and then foreign ministers of the parties should meet,” the state-run Turkish media quoted Erdogan as saying.
