Iraq’s Kurdistan Region completes Peshmerga force unification
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Kurdistan Region Peshmerga Minister Shoresh Ismail announced Thursday the completion of efforts to unify all Peshmerga forces under the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs.
In a statement, the ministry described the development as a “historic achievement,” saying the process of reorganizing and reunifying all Peshmerga forces under the ministry had been successfully completed.
The ministry said the process followed years of efforts and cooperation with the leaderships of Forces 70 and 80, adding that all accumulated obstacles and problems had been overcome.
It said the ministry had devoted its resources to completing the process, enabling Forces 70 and 80 to be unified through a “precise, military and planned process.”
“As part of this radical reform, all forces have been reorganized under a single command and control structure, including brigades, divisions and regional commands,” the statement said.
It added that the two military region commands would officially begin their work.
The ministry described the move as a “historic” achievement that provides the Kurdistan Region with a unified and qualified army operating according to modern standards under the direct command of the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs.
The ministry said the achievement resulted from the direct and continued support of the Kurdistan Region president, prime minister and deputy prime minister, as well as the important role of the U.S.-led international coalition under a memorandum of understanding signed between the parties.
