U.S. Embassy calls on American citizens to leave Syria via Jordan
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The U.S. Embassy in Damascus issued on Sunday evening a statement urging American citizens currently in Syria to leave the country via Jordan, citing the ongoing risks of armed conflict and violence.
“The Department of State’s Travel Advisory for Syria remains at Level 4: Do Not Travel,” the statement said. “This advisory remains in effect due to the risks of armed conflict and violence.”
The embassy emphasized, “If you are able to depart Syria on your own, please do so.” It clarified that U.S. citizens can cross into Jordan through land border crossings, where visas are available upon arrival.
The statement noted that there have been no changes to the status of border crossings—only currently operational land crossings are open for entry into Jordan. It also stated that Damascus and Aleppo airports remain operational, with regular commercial flights available.
The embassy reminded citizens that U.S. Embassy operations in Damascus were suspended in 2012 and that the U.S. government is unable to provide routine or emergency consular services in Syria.
It added that the Czech Republic serves as the protecting power for U.S. interests in Syria, but the consular services available to American citizens are “extremely limited.”
U.S. citizens in need of emergency assistance and unable to contact U.S. authorities directly were advised to reach out to the U.S. Embassy in Amman or the U.S. Interests Section at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Damascus.
