Child killed in landmine explosion in western Daraa

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – A child lost his life on Thursday in an explosion of a landmine of the war remnants in Daraa western countryside, south Syria.

A local source told North Press that 11-year-old  Muhammad Radwan lost his life as a result of a landmine explosion in a farmland north of the town of Tafas, west of Daraa.

“Radwan comes from the town of Karim al-Shamali in the Lajat field, east of Daraa. He lived with his family in the vicinity of the town of Tafas, where they worked in agriculture,” the source said.

Dozens of Lajat’s families moved to the western countryside of Daraa, where they live in tents and work in agriculture, after pro-Iranian militias established headquarters in the field following the settlement agreement of 2018, according to the source.

In July 2018, the opposition armed factions and government forces reached a cease-fire agreement mediated by Russia in the opposition-held areas in Daraa Governorate. Under the deal, the opposition armed factions agreed to hand over their weapons in exchange for staying in Daraa, and those who opposed the agreement they were sent to Idlib, which is under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).

The remnants of war have killed dozens of civilians, most of them children, with the government not doing anything to address the situation.
