IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – Turkish officers said on Tuesday that there would not be any military operation by Russian or Syrian government forces on Idlib Governorate, northwestern Syria.
This came in a meeting held by some Turkish officers with notables and representatives of the residents of Zawiya Mountain region in the southern countryside of Idlib.
The areas in the southern countryside of Idlib are witnessing a continuation of mutual shelling between the government forces and Turkish-backed armed opposition factions, also known as Syrian National Army (SNA).
The Turkish officers, stationed in the Turkish military base in the town of Belyon, assured that there would be no military operation against these areas [Idlib Governorate] by “the regime and Russian forces” the source added.
The officers called for the return of the displaced people to their homes, according to a source who attended the meeting.
Although the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria is subjected to a Russian-Turkish ceasefire agreement signed in March 2020, the area witnesses frequent mutual bombardment despite the entry of the ceasefire into force.
In March 2020, Russia and Turkey reached an agreement in Moscow that stipulated a ceasefire, the establishment of a safe corridor, and the conduct of joint patrols on the M4/Aleppo-Latakia Highway.
Early in July, a military source of Syrian opposition revealed about preparations by the opposition factions in northwestern Syria to launch a military operation against Syrian government forces in both countryside of Idlib and Aleppo.
