Rocket, drone attacks on Coalition in Iraq and Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday at noon, rockets targeted Ain al-Assad Air Base in western Iraq, Operation Inherent Resolve Spokesman Col. Wayne Marotto tweeted on Wednesday.

According to Marotto, 14 rockets were launched at the base, resulting in two military personnel being lightly wounded and material damage.

The perpetrators of the attack are unknown; over the past couple of months, Iranian-backed militias in Iraq have been blamed for most of the attacks, which are carried out with rockets or drones.

Approximately two hours before the attack on Ain al-Assad Air Base, a suicide drone attack on al-Omar oil field near Syria’s Deir ez-Zor, which is home to US military presence, was foiled, according to Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) head of Office of Media and Information Farhad Shami. No casualties or damage were recorded.

In the past few days alone, attacks against American and Global Coalition targets have increased; a drone attack targeted Erbil International Airport on Tuesday night, though it caused no casualties or material damage. The airport was previously attacked by a drone in April.

On Monday-Tuesday night, Iraqi security sources reported that US forces in Iraq shot down a drone over the US Embassy in Baghdad mere hours after a missile attack targeted a base in western Iraq that housed US soldiers.
