Syria’s Autonomous Administration to open university in Raqqa
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Executive Council of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) decided to open a new university under the name of University of al-Sharq (East) in the city of Raqqa, north Syria, in August.
The AANES posted on its official Facebook that the university will be opened in August 2021, and will receive students in October of the same year.
The university scheduled to open in the coming months, consists of three faculties: Arts, Educational Sciences, and Math, Chemistry and Physics.
The university will also include three institutes: Administrative and Financial Institute, Computer Institute and Languages Institute.
Studying at the university will be in the direct education system at the main headquarters of the university and its subsidiary headquarters, according to the AANES.
“Attending will be compulsory, and teaching will follow the European style, mainly depending on scientific research.”
It is noteworthy that the Autonomous Administration opened the first university in its areas in the region of Afrin in August 2015, where it included 4 faculties and 10 vocational institutes, in addition to three specialized academies for the Kurdish language, as the students numbered about 1,200 students at the university and the institutes.
In 2016, Rojava University was opened in the city of Qamishli, with seven faculties.
While Kobani University was founded on September 30, 2017, where only two faculties were opened, namely the Faculty of Basic Sciences (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) and the Faculty of Arts (Department of Language and Kurdish Literature).
Following the Turkish invasion of Afrin in 2018, some students of Afrin University moved to Rojava University and some to Kobani in order to be able to complete their study, while others dropped out of universities due to the war circumstances.
