Women celebrate International Women’s Day in northeastern Syria

HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – Today marks the 8th of March, International Women’s Day, and the people in northern and eastern Syria celebrate this occasion with all communities.

Hundreds of women in the city of Hasakah celebrated International Women’s Day in their folk dress during a festival organized by the woman’s organization Kongra-Star under the slogan “Our struggle, guaranteeing the revolution.”

The celebration featured songs and theatrical performances about women suffering from persecution in the past

Reem Mahmoud, president of Kongra-Star in Hasakah, told North Press: “In Rojava Kurdistan…dozens of revolutions took place, and one of those was the Women’s Revolution. Women are organized everywhere; politically, diplomatically, militarily, socially, and economically.”

“Kurdish, Arab and Syriac women have proven that women are capable of leadership, especially their steadfastness in the face of ISIS and the Turkish occupation,” she added.

She concluded that the participation of women in all areas of life and their celebration of a day for women is proof of how far women have progressed in northern Syria.
