Teachers in Syria’s Latakia condemn Ba’athist dominance of education sector

LATAKIA, Syria (North Press) – Teachers from Latakia said on Monday that there is no hope to develop the educational process in Syria, “as long as the Baathist mentality dominates.”

This came on the heels of the annual conference of the teachers’ union, which was held on Sunday at Tishreen University in Latakia.

They covered many issues related to the educational process, and the problems, suffering and pressures of the educational sector.

They also discussed the nature of work and the need to do justice to all teachers and administrators who were appointed as educational staff.

A teaching assistant at Tishreen University in the Department of Arts, who preferred not to be named, told North Press that they are used this traditional, dominant mentality.

“They confiscate your personality and creativity in the name of loyalty at the beginning, and in the name of gratitude to your guardian of grace, and devotion to a country from which you have only suffered poverty, hunger and humiliation,” he added.

The conference was attended by political, administrative, union, and student leadership at Tishreen University, in addition to the ministers of higher education and education, and the governor of Latakia.

At the end of the conference, the teaching assistant sarcastically said: “They lead you to be blessed from the shrine of the Leading Father (in reference to Hafez al-Assad), and to present the duties of obedience to his grave.”
