Pederson and Lavrov discuss the work of the Constitutional Committee
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – on Thursday, the UN envoy to Syria Geir Pederson discussed with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his deputy, Mikhail Bogdanov, the work of the Syrian Constitutional Committee.
Days before holding the fourth round of the work of the committee, whose third phase ended on August 29, without any significant results.
A statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the meeting discussed the evolution of the situation in Syria and the settlement of the Syrian crisis on the basis of UN Security Council Resolution 2254, including the work of the Syrian Constitutional Committee.
The statement added, that they emphasized on the importance of intensifying international efforts to help the return of Syrian refugees taking into account the results of the conference, which held in Damascus on the 11th and 12th of November.
The work of the Constitutional Committee began in November 2019 in Geneva, Switzerland, and stopped in the same month, the second round of the committee failed in the same month without a meeting.
The Syrian president said early in October that the Geneva talks are a political game, and it is not what the Syrians focuses on.
He added that the Syrians do not think about the constitution and no one talks about it. They care about the reforms that we need to launch and the policies that we need to change to meet their needs.
The Constitutional Committee consists of 150 members, divided between representatives of the opposition, the Syrian government and civil society.
The UN envoy has not reported any statement on the results of these talks, which come days before the fourth round of the Syrian Constitutional Committee.
