Qamishli hosts children’s theatre festival celebrating mother tongue

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – A children’s theatre festival opened on Tuesday at the Mohammed Sheikho Center for Culture and Art in the city of Qamishli, bringing together young performers from across northeast Syria’s Jazira region.

The two-day festival features seven theatre groups representing various cities and towns in the region and is being held under the slogan “Theatre in the Mother Tongue is More Beautiful.”

Zainab Mohammed, a member of the festival’s organizing committee, told North Press that preparations for the event began nearly three months ago.

“With the participation of seven groups from across Jazira, the festival launched today under the slogan ‘Theatre in the Mother Tongue is More Beautiful’,” Mohammed said.

She added that interest in participating exceeded expectations, with more than 200 children registering to take part in the festival’s activities.

“More than 200 boys and girls have joined the festival after months of preparation,” she said.

According to Mohammed, most of the performances and scripts presented during the event focus on educational, cultural, and awareness-raising messages for children.

“We know that the region has gone through periods of tensions and political conflict, and the Kurdish language in particular has faced many challenges. That is why we chose the slogan ‘Theatre in the Mother Tongue is More Beautiful,’” she said.

The festival includes theatrical and musical performances designed for children and aims to encourage cultural engagement through artistic activities.

Organizers said the event will continue for two consecutive days at the Mohammed Sheikho Center for Culture and Art in Qamishli.
