Guterres condemns Russian strikes on Kyiv, urges de-escalation

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned Russian strikes on Kyiv that killed 17 people and caused extensive damage to civilian infrastructure, calling for an immediate halt to attacks on populated areas, the United Nations said.

The strikes hit the Ukrainian capital overnight on Wednesday, in what the UN described as the deadliest Russian attack on Kyiv this year.

Guterres expressed concern over the continued escalation of attacks by Russia and Ukraine, which has caused civilian casualties and widespread damage to residential and other civilian infrastructure.

“The latest series of attacks follows an alarming pattern of escalating strikes against populated areas,” Guterres said, according to the UN.

He said attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure constituted clear violations of international humanitarian law and called for them to stop immediately.

The UN chief’s remarks came amid an intensification of Russian airstrikes across Ukraine and a continued rise in civilian casualties.

The UN also reported that overnight attacks killed one person in Kharkiv and three in Donetsk.
