Voting to begin for Qamishli reps. in People’s Assembly Elections
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The voting process to elect representatives for Qamishli region will begin on Sunday, Reber Sida, a member of the sub-electoral committee for the Qamishli region, told North Press on Saturday.
Sida said ballot boxes will first be opened in the presence of candidates, their representatives, and any voters wishing to attend to verify that they are empty before being sealed and officially opened for voting.
He explained that the committee has prepared a designated room for secret balloting, including lists of candidates’ names, while the legal committee will be responsible for verifying the documents of eligible voters approved to represent the Qamishli area.
According to Sida, each voter’s name will be immediately removed from the registry after casting a ballot in order to prevent duplicate voting and ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
He added that polling stations will remain open from 8:00 AM until 12:00 PM, provided that the required legal quorum of 70 percent is achieved.
If the quorum is not met within the specified time, voting will be extended for an additional hour before ballot boxes are opened publicly and counting procedures begin, paving the way for the announcement of four representatives for the Qamishli region.
Last week, the Higher Committee for People’s Assembly Elections announced the start of campaigning for candidates for two days while Saturday was designated as an electoral silence day. Sunday has been set as the official date for electing members of the People’s Assembly across electoral districts.
In an earlier statement to Syrian state media, Nawar Najmeh, spokesperson for the Higher Committee for People’s Assembly Elections, said the completion of elections in Hasakah would pave the way for the first session of the People’s Assembly.
He added that if the Syrian president issues a decree appointing the remaining one-third of council members, the council’s first session could be held after Eid al-Adha.
