QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syria will participate as a guest at next month’s G7 summit in France, with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa set to represent the country in what would mark Syria’s first participation in a G7 summit since the group was founded in 1975, three informed sources on Thursday told Reuters.
One of the sources said an official invitation addressed to al-Sharaa was hand-delivered to Syrian Finance Minister Mohammed Yosr Bernieh, who attended the group’s financial talks earlier this week in Paris.
The summit is scheduled to take place from June 15 to 17 in the southeastern French city of Évian-les-Bains.
A Syrian official familiar with the matter said Syria’s participation in the discussions is likely to focus on the country’s potential role as a strategic hub for supply chains following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
