Turkish border guards injure 5 people while attempting to cross into Turkey
HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – Five people were injured on Sunday evening by gunfire from Turkish border guards while attempting to cross into Turkey from the countryside of Sere Kaniye in northeastern Syria.
Local sources told North Press that all five injured individuals are from Deir ez-Zor Governorate in eastern Syria.
The wounded were transferred to al-Salam Hospital in Sere Kaniye, with reports indicating that their injuries are moderate.
This incident echoes a similar case in September and October, when some people were killed and wounded by Turkish border fire in the same area while trying to cross into Turkey.
Human rights observers have repeatedly raised concerns over the use of live fire by Turkish forces against civilians attempting to cross the border, noting that such incidents often occur in areas where refugees and displaced people seek safety or economic opportunities.
Sere Kaniye, a strategic town along the Syria-Turkey border, has seen frequent clashes and security operations since the beginning of the Syrian civil war. The city has been under the Turkish occupation and the control of the Syrian National Army (SNA) factions since 2019 after the Turkish Operation Peace Spring.
Authorities have not released official statements regarding Sunday’s incident, but local sources emphasize that the risks for civilians attempting border crossings remain high, particularly for those fleeing conflict or economic hardship in eastern Syria.
