Loud blast reported in Aleppo, linked to old munitions
ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) – A powerful explosion was heard Monday evening across the city of Aleppo in northern Syria, prompting initial concern among residents before state media attributed the blast to the detonation of old munitions.
Government outlets reported about an hour after the incident that “the explosion sound heard in Aleppo Governorate was a detonation of war remnants carried out by engineering units of the Syrian army.” No casualties or damage were reported in connection with the controlled blast.
The Syrian army frequently conducts operations to clear explosive remnants of war (ERW), including landmines and unexploded ordnance left behind after years of conflict. Such controlled detonations, while aimed at reducing danger to civilians, often alarm residents when no advance warning is given.
The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), along with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), also carries out demining and awareness campaigns in areas under its control, underscoring the wider national challenge of clearing explosives from civilian areas.
