Residents in Syria’s Suwayda demand right to self-determination
SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – Residents of the city of Suwayda, southern Syria, organized on Saturday a demonstration calling for “independence and self-determination.”
Local sources told North Press that the demonstrators raised slogans demanding self-determination and the autonomy of their local administration, separate from the Syrian transitional government.
The demonstrators also called on the Syrian government to disclose the fate of the kidnapped and disappeared individuals, who are believed to have been detained following failed attempts to forcibly control the governorate.
Additionally, the demonstrators urged the opening of a humanitarian corridor linking Suwayda to the Karmel region and called for the establishment of an international investigation committee to verify human rights violations.
This demonstration follows a large-scale attack on Suwayda, which has sparked widespread anger and resentment among the local population. Calls are increasing to hold those responsible for the violence accountable and ensure the protection of civilians in the region, according to the sources.
