Syrian Civil Defense contain 80% of wildfires in Latakia
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Latakia’s Civil Defense announced on Saturday that 80 percent of the wildfires raging in the northern countryside have been brought under control, though firefighters continue to face challenges accessing certain hotspots.
According to the state-run news agency SANA, Abdul-Kafi Kayal, Director of the Civil Defense Directorate in Latakia, said that firefighting teams and civil defense units managed to contain most of the blazes that broke out in the Kassab area near the Syrian-Turkish border.
Kayal added that cooling and monitoring operations are ongoing in Kassab, Shajar al-Ma‘bar, and the Chalma junction to prevent the fires from reigniting.
However, teams are struggling to reach scattered fires in the rugged terrain of Wadi al-Nab‘ain, near the village of al-Mushrifa.
“These fires are relatively small but difficult to tackle due to the topography,” Kayal noted, adding that monitoring teams will remain deployed for 24 hours to ensure complete containment.
