Trump-Putin meeting in Alaska ends without agreement on Ukraine

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The “Alaska Summit” between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, held on Friday, ended without any agreement on the war in Ukraine, though both sides described the talks as positive.

Speaking ahead of the summit, Trump had warned that Russia will face very dire consequences if it does not stop the war in Ukraine.

Following the three-hour meeting, the two leaders told reporters they had made progress on unspecified issues, but declined to provide details and did not take questions. Trump noted only, “There’s no deal until there’s a deal.”

Despite Trump’s earlier statement that halting the Russian-Ukrainian conflict was the summit’s primary goal, the talks yielded no concrete steps toward a ceasefire. Trump described the conflict as the bloodiest war in Europe in 80 years.

He suggested holding a trilateral meeting between Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and himself, though he offered no details on timing or arrangements. Putin did not address the proposal.

Putin instead reiterated Moscow’s position that the root causes of the conflict must be addressed before reaching a lasting peace. He also extended an invitation to Trump to visit Moscow following the Alaska talks.

For his part, Trump said he expects Ukraine and its European allies to deal constructively with the results of the negotiations and not to “torpedo the nascent progress.” He added that the responsibility now rests on President Zelenskyy to build on the summit’s outcome and work toward ending the war, now in its third year.

Kyiv has not yet issued a response to the Alaska summit, which marked the first meeting between Putin and a U.S. president since the outbreak of the war.
