U.N. warns of famine in Gaza as humanitarian system collapses
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The United Nations’ top global food security monitor warned on Tuesday that the worst-case famine scenario is now unfolding in the Gaza Strip, amid the near-total collapse of the humanitarian system due to the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas since October 7, 2023.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) reported that humanitarian airdrops over Gaza are insufficient to prevent a disaster, emphasizing that land-based aid delivery is more effective, safer, and faster.
Ross Smith, Senior Regional Programme Advisor at the World Food Programme’s Regional Bureau for East and Central Africa, stated that he is still unable to get sufficient humanitarian aid into Gaza despite recent Israeli measures to increase the flow of supplies.
Smith said during a media briefing at the United Nations office in Geneva that they have not received the necessary authorization to transport the volumes they requested.
