Rubio discusses drone attacks on Iraqi infrastructure with al-Sudani
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said on Tuesday that Secretary of State Marco Rubio held talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani regarding the recent wave of drone attacks targeting critical energy and military infrastructure across Iraq.
According to Reuters, Secretary Rubio emphasized to Prime Minister al-Sudani the importance of holding those responsible accountable and preventing further incidents.
On June 23, Iraq experienced a series of coordinated drone strikes, the most significant of which targeted Camp Taji, north of Baghdad, destroying a military radar installation.
Subsequent attacks hit the Imam Ali military base in Dhi Qar Governorate, the Balad Air Base, the Baiji oil refinery in Salah al-Din, and Kirkuk International Airport. The Kurdistan Region of Iraq has also seen near-daily attacks on Erbil Airport and various oil and gas facilities.
On July 18, Iraqi Armed Forces spokesperson Sabah Numan announced the preliminary findings of the investigation, stating that the drones used were of the same model and equipped with warheads manufactured outside Iraq.
He added that the investigative committee concluded that all the suicide drones involved were identical in type, clearly indicating a single perpetrator.
Numan further stressed that Iraq’s security and military leadership will not tolerate any threat to the safety of our armed forces or national infrastructure, pledging that legal action would be taken against all individuals involved, who would be referred to the Iraqi judiciary.
