UN chief says U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites as “dangerous escalation”
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warned on Sunday that the recent U.S. airstrikes targeting three Iranian nuclear facilities represent a “dangerous escalation.”
“I am gravely alarmed by the use of force by the United States against Iran today,” Guterres said. “This is a dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge – and a direct threat to international peace and security.”
The strikes, described as precise by U.S. President Donald Trump, were launched on the tenth day of the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel. According to Trump, the attacks specifically targeted Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.
In a statement following the strikes, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed it had not detected any rise in radiation levels around the targeted sites.
“We know this facility well,” said IAEA Director General Grossi. “There was no nuclear material at this site and therefore the attack on it will have no radiological consequences.”
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the U.S. action, emphasizing that Iran reserves all options to defend itself.
