DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Turkish Ministry of Interior announced on Tuesday that one person was killed and 69 others were injured following a 5.8-magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Marmaris in southwestern Turkey. The quake’s epicenter was located at a depth of 68 kilometers.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated that a young girl died and 69 others were injured in the earthquake that hit the southwestern region.
He added that the 14-year-old girl was taken to the hospital after suffering a panic attack but unfortunately succumbed shortly afterward.
Yerlikaya noted that most of the injuries occurred when people jumped from high places in panic during the tremor in Muğla Province, where Marmaris is located.
Urban Planning Minister Murat Kurum said that damage assessments are ongoing and that no structural destruction has been reported so far.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported that a 6.2-magnitude earthquake also struck the Dodecanese Islands in Greece, near the Turkish border. The tremor was felt across several neighboring countries, including Egypt, Greece, and Cyprus.
