American aid for ISIS camps in Syria “cannot last forever” – U.S. Ambassador
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Dorothy Shea told the Security Council on Wednesday that American support for managing and securing detention centers for Islamic State (ISIS) members in northeastern Syria “cannot last forever.”
Shea emphasized that “U.S. assistance has played a vital role in managing and securing Al-Hol and Roj displaced persons camps in northeast Syria, and, critically, Syrian Democratic Forces-managed facilities detaining thousands of ISIS fighters, but this assistance cannot last forever.”
“The United States has shouldered too much of this burden for too long. Ultimately, the camps cannot remain a direct U.S. financial responsibility.”
Shea urged countries to “expeditiously repatriate their displaced and detained nationals who remain in the region.” noting that these camps have become breeding grounds for extremism and pose a significant security threat to neighboring countries, particularly Iraq, which was once under ISIS control for about a third of its territory.
Addressing ongoing concerns over military operations in northern Syria, Shea stated, “the United States will continue to pursue a ceasefire that will enable our local partners to focus on combatting ISIS and maintain security of detention facilities and displaced persons camps.”
