Druze leader in Suwayda calls for ceasefire in northern Syria
SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajri, leader of the Druze community in Suwayda Governorate, southern Syria, called on Saturday for a ceasefire in northern Syria, advocating for the resolution of all conflicts through dialogue.
During a special interview with North Press, al-Hajri, leader of the Druze al-Muwahhidun, described the situation in northern Syria as “alarming,” stressing the importance of “dialogue among all involved parties.”
He remarked, “The groups fighting on Syrian soil are, in the end, Syrians. If they share a common history, they also share a common future. Therefore, they must convene at the dialogue table, with guarantors present for each side.”
When asked about reports suggesting he had received support from Israel, al-Hajri firmly denied the claims, stating, “We are an inseparable part of Syria, committed to the unity of its land and people.”
He also addressed past accusations, noting, “The former regime labeled us as al-Nusra Front, ISIS, and other such names. Today, it is clear to all sides that these accusations are baseless.”
“While the Druze community spans multiple countries in the region and maintains fraternal ties, we choose to refrain from engaging in certain state-level issues,” he added.
Al-Hajri emphasized the need to ensure the success of Syria’s transitional phase and to lay the groundwork for a stable future.
“The new Syria must be a homeland for all Syrians,” he said, underscoring the importance of inclusivity and justice in the rebuilding process.
The Druze leader expressed his aspiration for a future Syria governed by the rule of law, as a state of equal citizenship.
Al-Hajri’s statements reflect a broader call for unity and collaboration to rebuild Syria as a stable, inclusive, and law-abiding nation.
