Iraqi PM urges new Syrian leadership to reject extremism
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’a al-Sudani emphasized on Tuesday night the importance of the new Syrian administration rejecting terrorism and extremism while upholding human rights.
He stressed that the administration in Damascus must not become a tool in the hands of any foreign party.
Expressing concern over Syria’s ongoing situation, al-Sudani urged the new administration to renounce terrorism and collaborate with regional and international actors in combating the Islamic State (ISIS), which continues to maintain a presence in parts of Syria.
In an interview with BBC Arabic, the Iraqi Prime Minister expressed hope for an inclusive Syrian administration that represents all segments and components of the country’s diverse population.
Al-Sudani highlighted the ongoing communication between Iraq and Syria, particularly on security matters. He noted that security agencies from both countries maintain near-daily contact, focusing on the management of their shared border and related security challenges.
Notably, on Dec. 26, an Iraqi intelligence delegation led by Hamid al-Shatari, the head of the Iraqi intelligence service, visited Damascus. The delegation met with Ahmad al-Shara to discuss shared security concerns and strategies for enhancing bilateral cooperation.
