Syrian and Italian Foreign Ministers Discuss Lifting Sanctions and Future Cooperation
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Assad Al-Shibani, Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs in the caretaker government, met with his Italian counterpart, Antonio Tajani, at the People’s Palace in Damascus on Friday. The meeting marked a significant step in restoring diplomatic ties and addressing Syria’s economic recovery post-conflict.
In a joint press conference, Al-Shibani welcomed Tajani’s call for lifting sanctions on Syria, emphasizing that “sanctions imposed on Syria hinder the country’s recovery and development.” Al-Shibani also announced plans to lead a high-level delegation to Europe to strengthen cooperation and advocate for the removal of sanctions.
The Italian foreign minister’s visit follows a meeting held in Rome on Thursday, which included foreign ministers from Italy, France, Germany, the UK, and the U.S., as well as EU Foreign Affairs Chief Kaja Kallas. The discussions centered on the evolving situation in Syria and pathways to stability.
Tajani announced an initial developmental aid package for Syria, reiterating Italy’s commitment to supporting the Syrian people in achieving political stability and safeguarding human rights. He emphasized Italy’s focus on combating illicit activities such as drug trafficking, human smuggling, and illegal migration, as well as ensuring the safe return of displaced Syrians.
This visit highlights growing international interest in rebuilding Syria after 13 years of conflict. Both ministers agreed on the importance of upholding human rights and fostering a collaborative relationship to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region.
