Pedersen: Violations of Syria’s Sovereignty Must End
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen expressed deep concern on Wednesday over Israeli military actions in southern Syria, urging the international community to respect Syria’s sovereignty.
Speaking at a Security Council meeting, Pedersen criticized Israel’s activities in the region, describing them as violations of the 1974 Agreement on Disengagement. “The Israeli incursions beyond the disengagement zone are deeply troubling and must stop,” Pedersen stated.
His remarks came following reports of Israeli forces advancing into the Telul Al-Hamar area in northern Quneitra. These incursions, which have become more frequent since the fall of the previous Syrian government, continue to exacerbate tensions in the region.
The envoy also addressed broader concerns regarding Syria’s future, emphasizing that while UN Resolution 2254 remains a framework for political transition, its literal implementation faces significant challenges. Pedersen stressed, “The decisions made today will shape Syria’s future for years to come. Authorities must build trust and foster inclusive participation across all communities.”
He warned that ongoing violations and military actions in Syria undermine prospects for a structured and peaceful political transition. Pedersen called for urgent international cooperation to address these challenges, offering hope for a unified and stable Syria.
