Syrian Foreign Ministry Urges Full Removal of Economic Sanctions

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Syrian Foreign Minister Assad al-Shaibani called on Wednesday for the complete removal of economic sanctions on Syria, asserting that the measures have shifted from targeting former political motives to affecting the livelihoods of ordinary citizens.

“The sanctions no longer serve their original purpose and now directly harm the Syrian people,” al-Shaibani said in a press conference. He emphasized that lifting the sanctions is essential for Syria’s recovery, stability, and economic growth.

Acknowledgment of Exemptions

The minister welcomed recent exemptions and waivers issued by the U.S. administration, which provide limited relief from sanctions. He described these measures as “steps in the right direction” but insufficient to address the broader challenges facing the nation.

“We recognize the efforts that have led to these exceptions, and we extend our gratitude to all Syrian stakeholders who contributed to this progress,” al-Shaibani added.

Post-Conflict Diplomatic Momentum

Syria has seen a significant shift in its diplomatic standing since the fall of the previous regime, fostering optimism for renewed regional cooperation and stability. The easing of political tensions has encouraged neighboring countries and international actors to re-engage with Syria on various fronts.

The diplomatic thaw has led to the re-establishment of several trade and security agreements, paving the way for improved relations with regional and global powers.

Challenges of Sanctions

Despite these advances, the sanctions remain a formidable barrier to Syria’s recovery. Critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure reconstruction continue to suffer from restricted access to resources and international funding.

The sanctions, initially imposed to isolate the previous regime, have compounded the economic hardships endured by the Syrian population in the wake of years of conflict and instability.

A Call for Broader Action

Al-Shaibani reiterated that the complete removal of sanctions is a necessity to accelerate Syria’s transition toward stability and prosperity. He urged international organizations and governments to take proactive steps in ending these measures, which he said are “outdated and counterproductive.”

He also highlighted the need for collective international support to rebuild Syria’s economy and infrastructure, which have been devastated by years of conflict.

Looking Ahead

The Syrian government continues to engage in intensive diplomatic efforts to restore its international standing and secure relief from economic constraints.

“We have made significant progress through recent dialogues and consultations,” al-Shaibani noted, expressing hope that Syria’s emerging stability will encourage the global community to reassess its policies.

As Syria works to rebuild its institutions and economy, the government’s plea for the removal of sanctions reflects a broader strategy to integrate into the international community and enhance the well-being of its citizens.
