Syria’s caretaker FM calls for sustainable cooperation with Jordan

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Asaad al-Shibani, the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Syria’s caretaker government, called on Tuesday for sustainable cooperation with Jordan, emphasizing ongoing efforts to lift economic sanctions on Syria.

Al-Shibani, alongside head of the General Intelligence Agency Anas Khattab and Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra, met with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and other officials in Amman to discuss bilateral relations and regional challenges.

Al-Shibani urged Jordan to strengthen all forms of ties with Syria. “There is a real opportunity for sustainable cooperation between our nations that can yield positive outcomes for both sides.”

He noted that the evolving situation in Syria has mitigated key challenges previously faced by Jordan, particularly the issue of captagon trafficking. Al-Shibani also highlighted ongoing efforts to remove international sanctions imposed on Syria.

Regarding Syria’s internal dynamics, Al-Shibani remarked, “We are committed to leveraging the diversity within Syria to rebuild a strong and inclusive state. To this end, we have decided to establish an expanded preparatory committee for a national dialogue that ensures comprehensive representation of all Syrians. This dialogue must genuinely reflect the will of the Syrian people.”

He further commented on the recent decision by the U.S. Treasury to ease certain sanctions, describing it as a positive step but stressing the need for the complete lifting of sanctions.

For his part, Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Safadi reiterated Jordan’s support for Syria, expressing a shared commitment to fostering stronger bilateral relations.

Safadi stated that discussions with the Syrian delegation reflected a mutual desire to build cooperative ties. He announced an agreement to establish security and economic committees to coordinate efforts between the two countries, adding that they addressed the issue of Syrian refugees in Jordan.
