U.S. plans to ease sanctions on humanitarian aid to Syria

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday that President Joe Biden’s administration plans to ease restrictions on humanitarian aid to Syria.

According to the report, the Biden administration aims to expedite the delivery of essential supplies to affected populations through this measure. The ease of restrictions will reportedly take place without altering the sanctions currently in place.

The decision, approved over the weekend, authorizes the U.S. Treasury Department to issue exemptions enabling companies and relief organizations to provide critical services such as water, electricity, and basic supplies.

These exemptions, the report noted, are designed to facilitate the faster and more efficient delivery of aid while ensuring that sanctions targeting the Syrian regime remain intact.

The primary goal of this initiative is to enable relief groups to navigate legal barriers that hinder their operations in Syria, without allowing the Syrian authorities to benefit from the provided aid.

The newspaper, citing U.S. officials, explained that the administration seeks to balance the urgency of delivering humanitarian assistance with the need to maintain economic pressure on Damascus.
