Turkish border guards assault man, boy in Syria’s Derbasiyah

HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – Turkish border guards assaulted on Thursday a man and a young boy while attempting to cross the Syrian-Turkish border near the city of Derbasiyah in northern Hasakah Governorate, northeastern Syria.

Fatima Younis, head of the Shahid Khabat Hospital in Derbasiyah, told North Press, “Ali Hussein Jando, 14, from Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) and residing in the city of Qamishli, and Aziz Hamo Nasso, 33, from Qamishli, were both severely beaten by Turkish border guards near Derbasiyah while trying to cross into Turkish territory.”

“After examination by specialized doctors, they were found to have sustained severe bruises to the body due to the beatings they were subjected to, in addition to some surface wounds in different parts of the body. The young man Aziz suffered a mild wound to the lower jaw,” she added.

Younis noted their health condition was stable. Their relatives then transferred them to hospitals in Qamishli to receive proper treatment.

The Monitoring and Documentation Department recorded that in the first half of 2023, the number of affected Syrian asylum seekers has reached 452 individuals, including 20 children and 26 women. Tragically, 25 people were killed and 121 others were injured during direct targeting by live bullets while attempting to cross the Syrian-Turkish border. In addition, the Turkish border guards have assaulted and beat 306 individuals and have used excessive force to prevent them from crossing the border.
