Protests surge in Syria’s Suwayda, demanding overthrow of “regime”

SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – Protests have expanded on Monday in Suwayda Governorate, southern Syria, where the city and its countryside witnessed near-total closures, roadblocks, and the shutdown of government institutions. The demands of the protesters have also grown louder.

Protests have escalated on Monday in Suwayda Governorate, southern Syria, with widespread closures, roadblocks, and the closure of government institutions in the city and surrounding areas. The protesters’ demands have gained momentum, resonating louder than ever.

A protestor informed North Press that the number of participants in the demonstration at al-Karama square within the city of Suwayda has noticeably increased.

He added that delegations from Suwayda countryside arrived to participate in the protest in the city.

He further clarified that the slogans raised in Suwayda carry a strong political ideology, focusing primarily on the demand for the overthrow of the regime, rather than solely economic grievances.

North Press has documented protests in 36 villages and towns in Suwayda, including the city, al-Raha, al-Kafr, al-Qarya, Salakhed, Arman, Malih, Lahoya, Qaysama, al-Hurayssa, Dhibin, Umm al-Ramman, Mayamas, Sahra al-Khadra, Sahra al-Blata, Qanawat, Rima Hazem, Rima al-Lahf, Areeqa, al-Mashnaaf, Walgha, Attil, Salim, Mardak, Sama, Nimrah Shihba, Shaqa, Majdal, al-Majdal, Najran, al-Mazraa, al-Soura, Hazm, al-Mutuna, Sama, and al-Janina.

A source from the town of Qanawat informed North Press that “the emphasis was placed on continuing to achieve the popular demands and avoiding resorting to violence, in addition to focusing on the importance of preserving institutions and the governorate.”

Since August 17, popular protests have been ongoing in southern Syria, with a determination to continue and renew the call for the following days until the demands are met, according to organizers of these protests.
