Anti-government protests erupt in Syria’s south

Suwayda/Daraa, Syria (North Press) – Suwayda and Daraa governorates witnessed on Saturday and Friday night protests and blocking of few roads following resolutions made by the Syrian government to raise fuel prices amid deteriorating living conditions of the population.

A local activist from Suwayda told North Press that locals in the village of Majadil in the northwestern countryside of Suwayda fully blocked all roads leading to the city.

The activist added that the Damascus-Suwayda highway in the village of al-Mtoneh in the north of Suwayda was completely blocked and only humanitarian cases and students were allowed to pass through.

“The villages are coordinating to block all roads leading to the Governorate” and would not back down until the situation is improved, he noted.

On the other hand, local sources from Daraa Governorate, southern Syria, told North Press that dozens took to the streets in anti-government protests in the town of Inkhil and the city of Jassem in the northern countryside of Daraa and the village of Tel Shihab and city of Tafas in the western countryside of Daraa, and the village of Saida in the east of Daraa and demanded the “Syrian regime ” to leave.

The sources added that the protestors “chanted to oust the regime and demanded the immediate release of detainees and revealing the fate of the forcibly disappeared.”

The protestors condemned the starvation policy adopted by the government against the population in Daraa and held it responsible for the deterioration of the economic conditions, the sources noted.
