AANES commences project to extract water to Hasakah
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) announced on Thursday the start of a water extraction project from an area south of Amuda town to Hasakah city and its surroundings, in northeast Syria.
The AANES’ local administration of Jazira Region (Hasakah Governorate) announced in a press release the commencement of the drinking water extraction project from southern Amuda.
According to the AANES’ statement, the project will start from the villages of Sinjaq Saadoun and Kandur and extend to the city of Hasakah.
The statement added that this project is the first of its kind and is considered an important and pioneering project in the water sector, due to its humanitarian, economic, and social dimensions.
The statement further explained that this water extraction project aims to provide drinking water for over one million people in Hasakah, in addition to the villages along the extraction line.
According to the statement, the AANES’ research centers and water directorates have conducted a multitude of studies and experiments to investigate the quality and sustainability of the aquifer in southern Amuda. The results indicate that the area possesses a renewable and sustainable groundwater that provides high-quality drinking water.
In turn, Ster Murad, an AANES official, stated, “Today, we are here to officially commence the water extraction project from the villages of Sinjaq Saadoun and Kandur to Hasakah.”
She emphasized that the project aims to serve one million people in Hasakah, Tell Tamr, and their villages by providing drinking water services, expressing her hope for the support of international organizations to expedite the implementation of the project.
In October 2019, Turkish forces and their affiliated Syrian opposition factions, also known as Syrian National Army (SNA), launched the “Peace Spring” military operation and occupied Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain), in northern Hasakah, and its countryside. Since then, Turkey and its affiliated SNA factions have cut off water coming from Alouk water station, which lies in Sere Kaniye, to Hasakah and its countryside 30 times.
