AANES records 252 violations against women in NE Syria
RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – Women Coordination of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) revealed, on Monday, violations committed against women in its regions during the first half of the current year.
The Coordination recorded 252 violations against women, ranging from murder crimes, harassment, suicide, to violations due to customs and traditions.
In its semi-annual report, it documented 104 cases of polygamy, 25 incidents of killings of women, the same number of harassment cases, 19 suicide cases, and 23 attempted suicides.
The report included 18 cases of underage marriages, 9 cases of rape, 13 incidents of prostitution, 5 cases of marital infidelity, 12 cases of drug possession and usage, and one case of hayar (forced) marriage.
Hayar marriage dictates that a woman shall not marry a man from outside the tribe. By virtue of this custom, a cousin or relative can claim a woman for marriage himself or marriage to another relative. Engaging another man or the mere notion thereof would threaten this man’s life.
The AANES Women Coordination includes all the women who work within the institutions of the AANES. It addresses women’s issues within the AANES-held areas.
