Protests spread in Syria’s Suwayda
SUWAYDA, Syria (North press) – Al-Qrayya town, in the south of Suwayda Governorate, witnessed on Wednesday a protest against deteriorating living conditions, calling for the release of detainees held in government prisons, addressing the widespread use of drugs, and implementing UN Resolution 2254.
The protest took place in front of Sultan Basha al-Atrash shrine in the center of al-Qrayya.
A local source told North Press that people from all over the Governorate’s joined the protest. It is the first held in the countryside of Suwayda since protests renewed last month.
Since December 4, 2022, citizens have staged protests in Suwayda Governorate each Monday to express their rejection of the current economic and political situation.
As pro-government parties, including the Arab Socialist Baath Party and the Syrian National Social Party, staged pro-government intimidation rallies at the site of the protests, a demonstration was cancelled last week.
Yet on Monday this week, protests renewed in Suwayda despite similar government scare tactics.
