Hasakah’s Shaddadi is 3.000 Jobs Short
HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – Nearly 3.000 people in northeast Syria’s Shaddadi, south of Hasakah, are unemployed, said Hussein Baker, an official at the town’s Social Affairs and Labor Committee, affiliated with the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES).
The committee, which was established in 2018, has received roughly 4.900 job applications. Of these, 1.500 found placements; the remainder are still waiting.
Al-Baker told North Press that the region lacks projects that create job opportunities. He attributes this to the few organizations, factories and other facilities in the region.
Widespread unemployment has forced many, especially the youth, to move to other regions in search for work.
Like other areas in the Jazira region, the people of Shaddadi rely on agriculture and animal husbandry in order to make a living. Scarce rain has significantly affected both of these sectors over past years. The effect has been compounded by the collapse of the Syrian pound as measured against other currencies.
