Syrian government to demolish 15.000 Aleppo condos
ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) – An official at the Aleppo City Council, affiliated with Syrian government, said on Monday that the council would demolish 15.000 condos, or around 3.000 buildings, in 2023, claiming they are derelict.
The official told North Press, on the condition of anonymity, that 754 buildings, which threatened the lives of their residents, were demolished in 2022.
Yet the demolition projects are unpopular, especially because the government does not provide the condos’ owners with any compensation.
The official justifies this policy, saying “the council cannot afford it, as the compensations are very large”.
In September 2022, a five-floor building collapsed in al-Fardos neighborhood in eastern Aleppo city, killing at least 11 people, including seven women, three children and an elderly man.
Since the government forces took control of Aleppo in 2016, about 10.000 buildings have been classified as “at high risk of collapse” by special engineering teams, the official noted.
Some of the buildings were constructed without permits, on top of agricultural land. Others were destroyed during the heavy battles that took place in the city between 2012 and 2016.
