Protesters in Syria’s Daraa demand detainees’ release
DARAA, Syria (North Press) – Dozens residents of Jassem, a town in the northern countryside of Daraa, protested on Friday and demanded the release of detainees, who have been kept in prisons of Syrian government for years.
Local sources told North Press, “Dozens of residents gathered in the public square in Jassem, demanding the release of detainees and stop Shiite expansion and called for toppling the government.”
The sources added, “Protesters raised banners with phrases say revolution has been launched for sake of freedom and it will never be foiled…No for drugs, no for the regime and Captagon.”
The protesters shouted slogans stressed their intention to continue organizing protests until their demands are met, according to the sources.
Daraa, last week, witnessed several protests in a number of cities and towns including Jassem, Sanamayn, Dael, Muzayrib and Tel Shihab.
In July 2018, the Syrian armed opposition factions and Syrian government forces reached a settlement agreement mediated by Russia in the opposition-held areas in Daraa Governorate. Under the deal, the opposition militants who agreed to hand over their heavy weapons were handed a settlement card and allowed to stay in Daraa, while those opposed the agreement would go to Idlib, which is under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, formerly al-Nusra Front).
