UN, senior world leaders condemn military coup in Sudan

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, condemned the ongoing military coup in Sudan, and called for the immediate reconstitution of the government.

In a statement posted on Twitter he said “I condemn the ongoing military coup in Sudan. Prime Minister Hamdok and all other officials must be released immediately.”

“There must be full respect for the constitutional charter to protect the hard-won political transition. The UN will continue to stand with the people of Sudan,” Guterres added.

On October 25, 2021, the head of the coup leader, Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, led a military coup, which drew widespread international condemnation, calling for the restoration of civilian rule.

Media outlets reported that Sudan’s military, headed by Gen. al-Burhan, has dissolved civilian rule, arrested political leaders, declared a state of emergency and closed bridges and tunnels, protesters have reportedly taken to the streets of the capital, Khartoum, and there are reports of gunfire, as well as the Internet was cut in the capital.

The United States strongly condemned the leaders of Sudan’s military coup as the United Nations planned an emergency meeting on the crisis and protests entered a second day.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called for the immediate return to civilian rule and the release of the detained prime minister.

“The United States strongly condemns the actions of the Sudanese military forces; we firmly reject the dissolution of the civilian-led transitional government and its associated institutions and call for their immediate restoration.”

French President Emmanuel Macron also condemned the coup and called for the release of the Prime Minister Hamdok.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas condemned the coup, “Political leaders must resolve their differences through peaceful dialogue. They owe this to the people of Sudan who have been fighting for an end to dictatorship and for democratic change,” he said.

In the same regard, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin urged all political parties in Sudan to resolve their differences through dialogue to maintain peace and stability of the country.

The recent accelerating developments came after the USA announced proposals to solve the political crisis in Sudan.
