Iraqi refugee killed in Syria’s Hawl Camp

HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – On Tuesday, Internal Security Forces (Asayish) in Hawl Camp, east of Syria’s Hasakah, found a body of an Iraqi refugee who was killed by unknown individuals.

Iraqi refugee Bashar Walid Khalid was shot with three bullets in the third sector in the camp, a security source in the camp told North Press.

Most of the assassinations are carried out against Iraqi refugees, who makes up the majority of the camp’s population at around 30,606 Iraqis, according to the camp administration’s statistics.

In the light of the absence of sustainable solutions to address the growing security tension in the camp, researcher specialist in Syrian affairs of Human Rights Watch Sara al-Kayiali believes that it is necessary to fulfill several steps immediately.

The steps include “countries repatriating their citizens, Global Coalition support of the security sector, and strengthening awareness programs and psychological support for camp residents.”

Last month, Undersecretary of the Iraqi Ministry of Immigration Karim al-Nouri stated that his country did not want to take back its citizens “because of the threat they pose,” though he added that the possibility of return has still not been decided on.
