Swedish delegation discusses political solution of Syrian crisis with Syrian Democratic Council

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Tuesday, the delegation of the Swedish Foreign Ministry discussed ways to solve the Syrian crisis with the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) and affirmed on the necessity of ending the decade-long war.

The SDC and Swedish delegation held a closed meeting in the city of Qamishli, northeastern Syria.

The meeting was attended by Swedish Special Envoy to Syria Per Orneus, humanitarian and assistance official Thomas Marcus, and Evin Cetin, an advisor to the European Institute for Peace.

SDC co-chair Amina Omar, head of the SDC Executive Board Ilham Ahmed, and co-chair of the Foreign Relations Office Jihad Omar also attended the meeting.

According to a source which attended the meeting, the Swedish delegate stressed the necessity for the SDC to participate in international discussions related to Syria.

Sweden believes that “there is no political solution in Syria without the participation of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria,” according to the source which attended the meeting.

The Swedish delegate criticized the “weakness” of the assistance provided to the camps in northeastern Syria by UN organizations and promised to do its best to support the camps.

The Swedish delegation arrived in Qamishli on Saturday, and so far has met with SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi and made a visit to both the Washokani and Sere Kaniye camps for Syrians displaced by the Turkish invasion in October 2019.

The Swedish delegation expressed its belief that the AANES project is very important as a non-separatist entity, and that they fully respect the territorial integrity of Syria.
