The latest statistics of the Chinese Health Authority confirmed that 90% of people infected with coronavirus have recovered, while 5,120 infected remain in hospitals for treatment.

The Health Authority noted that it is recording a decrease in the number of infected people every day, and that of the 81,093 people confirmed to be infected with coronavirus, 72,702 of those infected have recovered and have been discharged from hospitals.

The Authority explained that, excluding the number of infected in Hubei Province, about 13,293 people were infected with coronavirus in the rest of the other provinces, of whom 117 died, meaning that the death rate outside Wuhan was 0.88%.

In Hubei Province, the epicenter of coronavirus outbreak, about 67,800 people were infected, 3,153 of whom died, making the death rate in this province 4.65%.

This comes at a time when China has embarked on the first phase of clinical trials for a vaccine for the COVID-19 virus.

According to China's clinical trial record on March 17th, Chinese efforts to produce a vaccine began on March 16th, the same day the United States announced the start of the trials; they are expected to continue until the end of the year.

An employee of the Chinese government-funded project told Agence France-Presse on Sunday:

"Volunteers for the first phase of the trials began receiving the vaccine."

With the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic and governments stepping up protection measures, pharmaceutical companies and research laboratories around the world are working hard to find a vaccine.

There are currently no approved vaccines or treatments for the new virus, which has so far killed more than 13,000 people.
