Armed group in Syria’s Suwayda blocks road to Damascus
SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – An armed group on Sunday blocked the Damascus-Suwayda road at a checkpoint in the northern countryside of Suwayda, southern Syria.
Local sources in Suwayda said the group blocked the Damascus-Suwayda road from early morning and prevented residents from traveling to Damascus.
The sources said the group “assaulted cars and civilians heading toward Damascus and prevented them from passing,” while allowing trucks carrying food, fuel and flour from Damascus to enter Suwayda.
They said the group later “allowed emergency cases and people traveling to Damascus International Airport to leave after they presented the required documents.”
At the same time, more than 50 university students were turned back and prevented from traveling to Damascus to sit their university exams, according to the sources.
The area is located in northern Suwayda and is controlled by the National Guard, which is affiliated with Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, the spiritual leader of Syria’s Druze community.
