Five killed, 16 injured in café blast in Damascus

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Five people were killed and 16 others were injured on Thursday after an explosive device detonated inside a café in the al-Hijaz area near the Palace of Justice in central Damascus, according to Syria’s Health Ministry.

The ministry said the death toll from the explosion had risen to five, while 16 others sustained injuries and were transferred to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Earlier in the day, eyewitnesses and local sources told North Press that an explosion struck a café on al-Nasr Street, near the Palace of Justice in central Damascus, with initial reports indicating multiple casualties.

A government source later confirmed to North Press that five people had been killed and 16 others injured in the blast.

Meanwhile, Syria’s Interior Ministry said it had launched field procedures following the explosion of an explosive device inside the café in the al-Hijaz area.

The ministry said Internal Security Forces patrols and ambulance teams were dispatched to the scene immediately after receiving reports of the incident. Emergency teams evacuated the wounded and provided first aid, while security forces established a security cordon around the area to secure the site and ensure the safety of residents.

Authorities have not announced any information regarding the perpetrators or the motive behind the explosion.
