Syrian authorities arrest former brigadier general over abuses

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Interior Ministry announced on Sunday the arrest of former brigadier general Abdul Ghafar al-Hussein, a senior officer in the former Syrian government forces, on charges related to alleged violations and corruption.

In a statement published on its official channels, the ministry said al-Hussein was detained following what it described as extensive monitoring and tracking of his movements.

According to the ministry, preliminary information indicates that al-Hussein was involved in multiple violations during his command of Regiment 66 and while overseeing the “Mankat al-Hatab” checkpoint. The checkpoint was reportedly used to detain hundreds of residents from Daraa governorate.

The ministry also alleged that al-Hussein played a role in preparing reports and testimonies that led to the arrest and enforced disappearance of a number of civilians.

Authorities further stated that investigations revealed his alleged involvement in corruption and embezzlement of public funds after his retirement in 2015. The ministry said he had used his former connections to gain influence within several service and administrative institutions.

The Interior Ministry noted that al-Hussein will be referred to the competent judicial authorities upon the completion of investigations to face the necessary legal procedures.

The arrest comes amid ongoing efforts by Syrian authorities to pursue former officials accused of involvement in violations and corruption-related offenses during previous years.
