Remains of over 60 people found in mass grave near Saydnaya

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Residents in the Deir al-Sheroubim area near the city of Saydnaya in Damascus countryside on Friday discovered a mass grave containing the remains of more than 60 people.

In a statement, the Syrian National Commission for Missing Persons said it had conducted an initial field assessment in coordination with relevant authorities to determine the technical, logistical, and legal requirements necessary for responding to the discovery.

The commission said the assessment is a preliminary step toward implementing appropriate measures in line with recognized professional and legal standards, with the aim of preserving evidence and safeguarding the dignity of the victims.

It stressed that all reports concerning suspected mass graves and human remains are being handled through a humanitarian and professional approach that respects the right of families to know the truth about their missing relatives.

The commission added that its work is being carried out in coordination with competent authorities to help determine the fate of missing persons while ensuring the integrity of documentation and verification procedures.

The National Commission for Missing Persons also urged residents not to approach sites suspected of containing human remains or mass graves, and to refrain from disturbing, moving, or removing any items found there.

It called on the public to report such discoveries immediately through official channels in order to protect evidence and ensure that all technical and legal procedures can be conducted properly.
