Syria closes another Euphrates Dam spillway gate as river flows decline

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Syria’s Ministry of Energy on Monday announced that technical teams have fully closed Spillway Gate No. 6 at the Euphrates Dam, citing the continued decline in water inflows from Turkey.

The move comes weeks after unusually high water levels in the Euphrates River prompted authorities to open multiple spillway gates, leading to widespread flooding that damaged agricultural land, homes, and infrastructure along the river.

According to the ministry, the closure of Spillway Gate No. 6 reduced water releases by 200 cubic meters per second.

The ministry added that the total volume of water currently passing through the Euphrates Dam stands at approximately 900 cubic meters per second, leaving only one spillway gate open.

In a statement, the ministry said technical and engineering teams continue to monitor water conditions around the clock and remain prepared to implement any necessary operational measures.

The ministry stressed that ongoing management efforts are aimed at ensuring the safety of water infrastructure and maintaining stability along the Euphrates River basin.
