Al-Sharaa, Trump discuss remaining Syria sanctions in phone call
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed the importance of lifting the remaining sanctions on Syria during a phone call on Sunday, according to the Syrian Presidency.
The two leaders reviewed bilateral relations as well as regional and international developments of mutual interest, the presidency said in a statement.
During the call, al-Sharaa stressed that removing the remaining sanctions is a key step toward revitalizing Syria’s economy and improving living conditions for Syrians.
He underscored the need for continued international support during the country’s reconstruction and recovery phase.
Al-Sharaa added that ending the sanctions would encourage investment and create favorable conditions for the return of economic and development projects across vital sectors, contributing to stability and sustainable development.
The conversation also addressed security developments in the region and challenges stemming from ongoing regional tensions.
For his part, Trump expressed interest in following developments in Syria and the broader region, emphasizing the importance of maintaining stability and supporting recovery and reconstruction efforts in the country.
According to the statement, both sides agreed to continue communication and coordination on issues of common interest in a manner that serves the interests of both countries and contributes to regional security and stability.
The call comes amid ongoing efforts by the Syrian government to secure broader international engagement and support for economic recovery following years of conflict and isolation.
Damascus has repeatedly called for the removal of sanctions, arguing that they hinder reconstruction efforts and economic growth.
